Noticing my body’s needs is very important to me. Although I don’t always find it easy. Especially when I study a lot, I feel like I am only living in my mind. With the start of the new semester, I promised myself to be more aware of the signals my body is sending me. Often, I am so occupied with things I don’t recognise that I am tired or dehydrated. This needs to be different. In order to achieve lasting change, I made small alterations to my daily routine.
Our evening and night set the tone for the next day so I try to give my body the care and rest it needs. Here too, there doesn’t exist perfectionism. Showing up and doing the things you feel you need the most, even if that is only taking a shower, is also enough.
SLOW EVENING ROUTINE 🌚
- Shut off electronic devices or lay them somewhere you don’t see them so you aren’t tempted to check them
- Do your hygiene routine
- Drink some water or drink a sleep tea (Chamomille works great. )
- Put a glass of water on your nightstand for in the morning
- Do some stretches or an evening yoga practice. I personally enjoy tiring myself and doing some strenuous yoga poses but I know this isn’t for everyone.
- When in bed, you can think of three things, persons, situations, experiences you’re grateful for that happened today or are happening in your life at the moment.
- Do some breathing exercises like counting your breath. When your thoughts are racing, you can calm your mind by focussing on your breath (inhaling and exhaling deeply). Notice the relaxation in your body.
Now I am curious. Do you have an evening routine and if so, what’s your ideal routine?
